I’m sorry that, for personal reasons, it’s been just about forever since my last post. I hope to change that in the future.
In the meantime, a number of minor WordPress releases have come and gone - but today the next major revision of WordPress, version 2.1 (aka “Ella”), has been released. In addition to some 500+ bug fixes, it is purported to have more efficient database code which basically means “it’s faster” (a good thing!). On top of that, WordPress 2.1 also includes a bunch of new features and enhancements, including autosave, a tabbed editor for easy switching between WYSIWYG and coding, the ability to make pages private (or save them as drafts - finally!), search engine privacy options, spell checking and much more. Get the details over at wordpress.org.
They finally updated the upgrade instructions in the Codex to reflect the latest version — but you should probably wait before you upgrade to WordPress 2.1!
If you do updgrade, please let me know how smoothly it went for you. Thanks!

welcome ella!
I’m so glad you’re back! You don’t know me but your blog helped me figure out what to do with my blog. With no new posts for so many months I was worried. You know, we get to “know”, in a way, people whom we read every day, and because it’s cyberspace we have no way of knowing if they’re ok or not (images of car wrecks and/or hospice dance through my head). Kind of a thought-provoking aspect of being out there.
I’m looking forward to reading more of your helpful articles!
I’d love to hear what your take is on what plugins are the ones to have now with all the changes in WordPress.
As to how it went: I’d never upgraded before and was having a weird problem due to some code some plugin stuck in my index page. Someone on the forum helped me with it. I’m not sure, but I don’t think the instructions were updated when I started upgrading. 2 hours at night plus about five in the morning (two figuring out which plugins I still needed).
But the second upgrade, with another blog, went smoothly. 7 minutes.
It is a LOT faster than the 2.0.6 I’d been using! I still am using the Admin Drop Down Menus, though. If you have a lot of plugins it’s easier to see them that way.
@Tracey
Thank you so very much for your kind words! It is really nice to know that my blog was helpful to you, as well as that people care
The second half of 2006 was a tough time for me, but make way for 2007! I’m doing well now and am glad to be back here blogging! I’ve also just started planning my wedding and will likely be launching a new blog chronicling my planning efforts for the big day (combo eek! and wahoo!)
Additional thanks for being the first to reply with info on how your upgrade experience went.
I upgraded to 2.1 on three blogs with no apparent problems.Layout on 2.1 more closely approaches Steve Smith ordered list plugin.
Sorry to learn that the second half of 2006 wasn’t a good time for you. Best wishes on your wedding and for a long and financially rewarding life
Lastly I assume you know that Wp now lists 1225 possible themes. It is now setup more like yours.Since it was a bit of hunt to find you again I have both bookmarked and subscribed via Blogline to your rss feed.
Keep up the great work
