What’s the best webhosting company for WordPress bloggers?
I was recently contacted by a reader who was disappointed because they had chosen the same webhost as I did for their blog, assuming that I chose my host because they’re great for blogging and finding themselves bummed when they didn’t get the same performance as my blog has. I chose my webhost (Prohosters) years ago for reasons unrelated to blogging (and now am wishing they had cPanel and Fantastico…) and have a dedicated server which costs me $300 a month (I am self-employed, after all). But this reader chose one of their $25 a month shared solutions and found himself disappointed by the speed (or lack thereof) in which his WordPress powered site loaded. So he asked me, and now I’m passing the question on to you, my faithful readers:
What is the best webhosting company for WordPress bloggers?
I would personally love to hear all of your experiences, positive and negative, so please comment away!!

Hey Emily, I am looking forward to seeing what others say. I use siteground and have been really happy with their service. Its $5 a month, has cpanel, fantastico, 12gb of space, a free domain, and a whole lot more. I’ve only been using them for about 3 months but have had no problems, and when I’ve had questions they responded quickly.

Emily;
I’ve had the best of luck with my hosting company, which was “MidPhase.” I signed up for their entry level package at 10 in the morning last October, and by 2 p.m. that afternoon, I was writing my first post on my blog. It is quick, I never have any server downtime, and I have plenty of dedicated server space & site traffic, for a very low amount of money per month–I paid all up front.
However, I only have one SQL account, and one domain, but that’s all I need. All I use my site for, is blogging. Now, when I have issues, their tech support team is always there, responding withing 15 minutes of an email.
They are hardly expensive, which was good for me in the start. I love my hosting company, and if I had a chance to do it over again, I’d still pick them.
Hope this helped!

I use blogsome to host my blog. Mainly because its all managed, the blog is setup for you. I alos use dreamhost to host my images, this is because the blogsome image hosting is terrible, you cant manage the images once there uploaded or even see what you have uploaded.

I’m not sure which is the best, but currently I’m using a free bloghost which allows you to install your own Wordpress (unlike Blogsome which uses Wordpress MU). The url is http://www.blorc.com. I’m very happy with their support and speed, furthermore, they’re free! What more can I ask, right?
Besides that, they do offer paid hostings too but right now I’m pretty satisfied with the free ones they’re offering.

Site5.com. They’ve been around for a while, the price per month (even for the bottom-end shared hosting) is very competitive, and there’s loads of space & bandwidth. In fact, prices have gone down since I joined up.
They are VERY Wordpress friendly. These guys know what they are doing.

I’m pretty happy with Total Choice Hosting. I’ve been with them for about three months and they’ve been very reliable. Their servers are fast and the rates are very reasonable. Plus they offer Fantastico for easy installation.

That siteground one looked pretty good. For the same price, $5/month, I don’t have nearly as much, but I’m really happy with my webhost, thunderhost.org, especially their tech personnel. They seem really knowledgeable and polite, opposed to the dumber-than-rocks-yet-arrogant types I’ve dealt with in the past. The latest version of Fantastico, along with the latest WP version, is part of all their plans.

I was actually going to post my “reviews” on my website (but haven’t yet because I’m the world’s best procrastinator). When I finally decided to pay for hosting, I went with iPower (iPowerweb) because I’d seen an ad for them & the price seemes reasonable. But I had a little trouble understanding how to use the cpanel and some of the FAQs weren’t very well written. Since then, their FAQs have improved, and they’ve moved to vdeck (but I wasn’t given the opportunity to use it). I ended up dropping them, even tho they offered me some fabulous deals. I really liked them & am actually considering going back to them if I decide to try Windows-based hosting.
But for now, I have 2 hosting services. I signed up with StartLogic about 3 years ago. I LOVE vdeck! It’s so much easier (for me) than cpanel. But the extra goodies are limited. The WordPress they offer is 1.5 (or at least it was when I installed it, maybe they’ve upgraded since then). For the most part, I got good customer service from them, but had difficulty getting an additional domain name registered. That frustration led me to look elsewhere.
Just a couple months ago, I decided to try one of the hosting companies recommended by WP (because I love WP). I went with BlueHost and I LOVE them! I’m still not crazy about cpanel, but the Fantastico library is amazing! Of course, I basically only use WP, but am trying to learn PHP-Nuke (started with StartLogic) and another CMS. BlueHost’s customer service seems to be proactive, but I really haven’t had to deal with them very much.
In all cases, I use shared hosting. It’s enough for me, since I don’t get the kind of traffic How to Blog does. But maybe someday…

I too use bluehost (www.bluehost.com) for my WP blog. I love them because they have 24/7 US-based tech support. Plus, they have reasonable plans that come it at about $7 a month. I’d rather pay $2 more a month for that development space, extra database room, and friendly helpful service.
Also, they have Fantastico and CPanel. And yes, Fantastico is fantastic. As a former vDeck user, I wish cPanel was a little better organized. Maybe they should take a look at Tidwell’s ‘Designing Interfaces’.

I use DreamHost. Although they have had a few server issues lately-my blog never went down. I have 1184GB bandwith, 23940 MB storage space, unlimited MySql databases, unlimited domain/subdomains, Cpanel, phpMyAdmin, one click installs-Including WordPress and updates to WP (I still upgrade on my own-I find it easier), for 9.95 a month and 9.95 a year domain registration.

I use a very small privately owned hosting & design firm callled Dub Design [http://www.dubdesign.co.uk] They only host a few sites so there services are not spread so thin - but they offer unlimited emails, mysql etc… come with cpanel and fantastico deluxe, plus wordpress comes already installed.
I’ve been with them a couple of years, and have just got them to set me up a new site.

I switched to BlueHost a few months ago. Today they announced a new plan with 15 mb of space, 400gb of bandwidth per month, all for $6.95/month using the 2 year signup. Naturally, all existing customers are upgraded upon request (just a simple email to support). Combined with no setup fee, free domain, cPanel, and Fantascio for one click installation of WordPress and other php scripts, I don’t think you can find a better plan. Oh yes, and you can host up to 6 domains on this one site for no additional charge.

I used Startlogic for about a year, but will likely switch when it is time to renew. In general, they are ok. The customer service has been good, but I’ve had more than a few problems getting my site to come up early in the mornings on weekends.
Also, their renewal emails are confusing and I ended up paying for the renewal of a domain name I no longer wanted - $15 bucks for nothing and not enough money to spend a few hours trying to get it back.
It’s funny how quickly customers will walk when you have poor communications.
I use a 3-column WordPress Theme, it is a highly modified version of “A blog apart.” Check it out and let me know what you think or how I can improve the number of comments.
Thanks!

I’ve used Laughing Squid for about a year now. While I run a NewsBruiser blog, I’ve also experimented with WordPress there. Their service is very good with no downtime that I’ve noticed. The cost is $96/year. They don’t have Fantatisco but they do have very detailed and simple instructions for installing WordPress.

I am using 1and1 (1and1.com). They have cheap, affordable hosting, lots of features and crappy tech support (not that you will actually have to call in or email for any support, everything is documented online). I can not remember a single instance where I have had downtime with them!

Bluehost features Fantastico, cPanel, 24 customer support (they’re really on the ball), and a fair price. You get everything you’re looking for plus great support and it’s definitely affordable. I found that installing WordPress using Fantastico is easier than signing up for a Yahoo e-mail account. It’s the best.

This is the hosting company I use for my own website, which has lots of plans for various needs. The reason I chose them was their extremely fast support (questions answered practically within minutes or within half an hour, at both their support forum and their customer ticket support system). The other consideration was that they had good prices for what they gave, and the fact that no limits were placed on things like MySQL database creation, email addresses, subdomains, and such.

Looks like bloggers need to take a better look at the Sonnenschutz or like Plauener Spitze and also Raffrolls and Gardinen! Publisher Network (which is still in Beta) because Google is apparently planning on screwing AdSense publishers in the Sun.

I like Dreamhost. $9.99 a month when paying in advance. 1TB of bandwith, tons of storage. Auto install of WP and a few other programs. Check it out.
They have only had issues a few times, mostly DOS attacks.

I have to add a “me-too” for Bluehost. I host my WordPress-powered blog with them and I have found that setup was a complete snap. I don’t use them as a image-host however. I have been using Fotki.com for image hosting - at $30 a year they offer unlimited space, and will print your images CHEAP - we’re talking 9 cents for a 4 x 6 print, and allow selling setups for professional photographers. My blog images load very quickly from this site. This makes them a fantastic multi-purpose imaging site.

I’m on www.imhosted.com which has been good. Startup was a little rocky but we got it sorted. I have unlimited everything except storage (150 GB) and bandwidth (3000 GB/mo) which feel unlimited. cPanel and Fantastico included and setting up WordPress was super easy.
24/7 online chat support was hard to connect with at first, but now they seem to be on the ball.
All this for something like $7/month (not exactly sure because I signed up during a promotion and got some sort of discount).

I’ve been using http://www.poweb.com since August 2005 with very little trouble (except for their ’sometimes lacking’ in the knowledge area!). US$67 buys you a years’ hosting plus a free domain name and 5 x MySQL databases. They don’t have a traditional C-Panel or fantastico as such, but their system and 24-hour live / phone support is easily the equivalent. I’d rate them around 7.5 / 10.
