How to Blog : Adding pictures to Blogger and Blogspot just got easier thanks to “Hello BloggerBot”

It’s been a while since I played around with Blogger, so I created another new account where I could post all of the truly funny pictures, stories, etc that get forwarded to me so that I could share them with everyone w/o clogging up folks’ inboxes (warning - some of these jokes are dirty or political in ways that some might find offensive instead of funny - visit at your own risk as your sense of humor may different from mine).

Much to my surprise, when I clicked the button to post a picture, I got the following message:

Blogger does not directly provide image hosting, although you are welcome to include any images in your blog if you have them stored online elsewhere. However:

Windows users can also use the Hello BloggerBot to post pictures directly to their blogs.

Mac users (and anybody else, for that matter!) can use Flickr to photoblog; see this article for details.

Once you have an image online, you can include it in either your template or in a specific post by typing in the following tag: . Just replace the URL here with the actual URL of your image.

My first reaction was — what?!?!? How can Blogger not host images? Yes, some blogs are text only, but most people are going to want to add photos to their blogs. And since Blogger is targeted towards those who aren’t necessarily the most tech-savvy out there, asking them to type in HTML tags and find a place to store their images is just ridiculous.

But then I checked out Hello BloggerBot - and while it’s still nowhere near as simple or elegant as adding images to TypePad is, it’s a workaround that’ll have to do for now - and, like Blogger, it’s free. Problem is, you have to provide a caption for each and every photo, and upload them one at a time to Blogger. And each photo is considered its own post. Not exactly what I was going for.

UPDATE: I gave up on using Blogger to host my Funny Pictures blog, and moved it to TypePad. Ahhh…much better

I believe Google has integrated posting pictures to your Blog inside their (great) picasa software.
So if you install Picasa, you’ll see that adding pictures to your Blogger blog is a snap.

I got around the Hello BloggerBot single posting thing by going back into the posting in Edit mode. There I can add text posting to my image that was uploaded by Hello/BloggerBot, but, yes, the need to caption was irritating and I really envy the sites that can put series of thumbnails in their sidebars or wherever.

i am just now getting into blogs. but it seems like using picassa to upload images and thumbnails to a “storage blog” and then linking might be a viable solution. that way you could have a gallery on your side bar or a link to a gallery (a linked archieve post) - and you can also change up your webdesign background and icons without making them posts on your blog.

I just googled trying to find where I’m going wrong and found you. Have been trying to add a pic to my profile using hello and picasa… and it’s not working! The url doesn’t have the correct .jpg extension. I’m exhausted…

First, let me comment on your excellent site. Very informative Blog. Another site you might consider for image hosting is Image4U, http://www.image4u.org.

It complements other sites for use in long time storage and is very easy to use.

It is possible to at the image tag into the source code? Assuming you knew a bit about php? Or would you have to know a lot.

Hmm… the problem I’m having with picassa and hello, is that I can’t seem to “just” host a picture. I can make a picture into a new blog post. But I don’t want to do that. I want a profile picture, which means I need a url somewhere. Instead of forcing me to make a separate blog to store my pictures, why doesn’t picassa just let me upload my pics, and let me know where they are so I can use those URLs to link to them from anywhere?

It just seems needlessly complex and user-hostile
